FFL - Fantasy Football
Over the years I have taken part in many Fantasy Football League (FFL) competitions. This page is my place to share my FFL tips and links. You may or may not find it useful!
I started a private league at work in 1995 that was based around the Daily Telegraph competition. In those early days, I had to type in the player points each week into a spreadsheet! I had written a small application based on an Access database to show league tables, points etc. This was hard laborious work for me.
A couple of years later, the Telegraph introduced Super Leagues. The Telegraph took care of points, your own league table, transfers. Basically everything! Much better.
Fast forward to 2005. A new league was started at work. This was a private league that was auction based, but still used the Telegraph points (now downloadable from their site, so no typing). The auction was great. Knowing that your players are only your players was great. Rich Croft had developed a web based application that was great. Best of all though, I won!
I won the first two years - Paul Woodford finishing second on both occasions. Last year I finished 3rd - Paul finally taking first place. When putting a squad together, I try and stick to the following:
- Balance is critical, do not over-spend on any one player.
- Get at least 2 top defenders and 1 top striker.
- Midfielders (with a couple of exceptions) are a dime a dozen. Try and get 2 who can pull in between 110 and 150 points. Anything else is a bonus.
- The exceptions are Ronaldo, Lampard and Gerrard. These are equivalent to a top striker.
- Try and get defenders from the big four only. There is always a couple of other teams that has an unusually good defensive record (usually Everton), but they rarely do as well as the big four.
- Last, but most importantly, make sure you enjoy lots of luck during the course of the season. Bad luck, will scupper even the best plans and squads.
